As I mentioned in an earlier column, The Longest Advance by steps started in San Francisco. We post-haste moved off from the urban confused noise of the bay and traveled southern through the central dell from Sacramento, CA. Our path closely followed US Public road 99. The towns all had a for the use of all thread, farming. Each area known for one specialized harvest. Walnuts, amygdalae, grapes, olives, melons.
We wanted to get to Bakersfield as we knew our path would turn east at that sharp end, towards Arizona and New Mexico, title us to our ultimate bound of Washington DC by summertime.
